Kindergarten Program
“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Kindergarten is a pivotal year in the developmental and academic journey of a child as it lays the foundation upon which all future education is built. We focus on the development of the whole child through art, music, dramatic play, large and fine motor activities, as well as an emphasis on academics. Students are taught Math, Language Art, Science, Bible, and Social Studies through a variety of media.

The pace of instruction for kindergarten at Santa Barbara Christian School is set to achieve the following goals by the end of the school year:

Letters: Each student will know how to write all upper and lower case letters of the alphabet in
D’Nealian manuscript.

Sounds: Each student will know all sounds, blends, and diagraphs, as well as be able to apply phonics and punctuation rules.

Reading: In addition to learning to read, each student will be given the opportunity to work on his/her speed, fluidity, intonation, comprehension, listening skills, and verbal expression.

Writing: Each student will be able to create and identify a simple sentence.

Independence: Each student will learn how to employ good work and study habits

Math: Each student will be able to count up to at least 100, as well as perform basic addition and subtraction problems. The concepts of money, time, and measurement will also be introduced.

Individual Course Objectives and Goals:

Bible: to provide a systematic study of the Bible which will lead children to discover that God, who manifested Himself in the Old Testament, is eager to manifest Himself today in the lives of children who will enter into fellowship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. Through His Holy Spirit, God wants to empower His modern army, the Church, to change the world.

Language Arts: the first semester of our Language Arts program is designed to prepare the students for reading activities in the second semester. The students will learn the alphabet, letter sounds (short and long vowels) and formation (upper and lower case) in D’Nealian. Through the A BEKA curriculum they will learn to blend consonant and vowel sounds, consonant diagraphs and apply phonics and punctuation rules. Students will read sight words, color and number words, listen and read for comprehension and recognize rhyming words.

Math: to learn and understand small numbers, quantities, and simple shapes in their everyday environment. Students will count, compare, describe, and sort objects, and develop a sense of properties and patterns.

Science: links God’s written Word to His creation. God uses His creation, what we observe in nature, to teach eternal truths. The program relates the properties of materials, types of animals and plants, and composition of the earth to findings of science that do not conflict with the Bible. Students learn science concepts through hands-on activities and solid content knowledge.

Social Studies: to develop literate citizens who can demonstrate their knowledge, skills, spiritual principles and civic values as they become active and reflective participants of the world around them. Our program is designed to give students an understanding of themselves, their families, their community, important people, places, events and holidays. Students will understand that God has a plan for their lives, this world, and all the people He created.
