SBCS Middle School Science
In order to learn and understand science one must use as many learning modalities as possible. SBCS science courses include almost daily hands on activities, which include write ups of what was done, what happened, and why it happened. This consistent approach to analysis helps to develop a “science sense” in students.
As a Christian school, we spend time discussing how the science we do on a daily basis is really a revelation of God’s hand in creation and his work in the universe. Issues such as creation, evolution, and dinosaurs are discussed as we analyze what is presented within the text and what is revealed in the Bible. The California Standards-based text is our primary text and allows our students to receive the same academic information studied by students throughout the state. We enhance their learning of scientific truths by biblically evaluating those ideas presented in the text.
All three middle school grades are involved in the school’s Science Fair with the opportunity to take their projects to the County and State Science Fairs. All our students’ Science Fair projects include: a background investigative report, a scientific investigation, a science project exhibit, and an oral report.
6th Grade is a Focus on Earth Science. In Earth Science we follow the California Science Content Standards for 6th Grade. Included in the study is Plate Tectonics and Earth’s Structure, Shaping Earth’s Surface, Heat, Energy in the Earth System, Ecology, Our earthly Resources, and Investigation and Experimentation.
7th Grade is a Focus on Life Science. In Life Science we follow the California Science Content Standards for 7th Grade. The study of life science includes: Cell Biology, Genetics, Evolution, Earth and Life History, Structure and Function in Living Systems, Physical Principles in Living Systems, and Investigation and Experimentation.
8th Grade is a Focus on Physical Science. The Physical Science follows the Science Content Standards for California. The study of physical Science includes: Motion, Forces, Structure of Matter, Earth in the Solar System, Reactions, Chemistry of Living Systems, the Periodic Table, Density and Buoyancy, and Investigation and Experimentation.
